Quorthon gründete 1983 im Alter von 17 Jahren die schwedische Metal-Band Bathory, deren Kopf und Songwriter er war. Als solcher gilt Quorthon als einer der Wegbereiter für den Black Metal und den Viking Metal, seine ersten sechs Alben gelten als Meilensteine. Über den Großteil seiner Alben hatte er keine feste Besetzung. Quorthon gab selten Interviews, lebte von der Metal-Szene abgeschieden und wollte nicht live auftreten. Er gründete auch die Band Quorthon, welche sich allerdings stark von Bathory unterschied. Am 8. Juni 2004 verkündete die Seite Blabbermouth.net, Quorthon sei im Alter von 39 Jahren verstorben ! und am Vortag tot in seiner Wohnung in Stockholm gefunden worden, gab Thomas Forsberg als seinen bürgerlichen Namen an und schrieb, er sei der Sohn des Black-Mark-Production-Inhabers The Boss; als vermutete Todesursache wurde Herzversagen angegeben. Die Meldung wurde von zahlreichen weiteren Seiten übernommen. Auf der offiziellen Bathory-Seite wurde auf Quorthons Tod ausschließlich mit dem Hinweis „In memory of Ace/Quorthon" hingewiesen, die Vaterschaft wurde durch Quorthon bestritten, zudem soll The Boss 12 ...
